Halloween Guide - How to Keep Your Children Safe

Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is a cherished tradition, but the excitement of the night can cause children to forget to be careful. There is no real "trick" to making Halloween a real treat for the entire family. The major dangers are not from witches or spirits but rather from falls and pedestrian/car crashes. Many communities officially designate a "Beggars' Night" and assign specific hours for trick-or-treat activities. Both children and adults need to think about safety on this annual day of make-believe.

Motorists: The National Safety Council urges motorists to be especially alert on Halloween.

  • Watch for children darting out from between parked cars.
  • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.
  • At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing.

Parents: Before children start out on their "trick or treat" rounds, parents should:
  • Make sure that an adult or an older responsible youth will be supervising the outing for children under age 12.
  • Plan and discuss the route trick-or-treaters intend to follow. Know the names of older children's companions.
  • Instruct your children to travel only in familiar areas and along an established route.
  • Teach your children to stop only at houses or apartment buildings that are well-lit and never to enter a stranger's home.
  • Establish a return time.
  • Tell your youngsters not to eat any treat until they return home.
  • Review all appropriate trick-or-treat safety precautions, including pedestrian/traffic safety rules.
  • Pin a slip of paper with the child's name, address and phone number inside a pocket in case the youngster gets separated from the group.

Costume Design:
  • Only fire-retardant materials should be used for costumes.
  • Costumes should be loose so warm clothes can be worn underneath.
  • Costumes should not be so long that they are a tripping hazard. (Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injuries on Halloween.)
  • If children are allowed out after dark, outfits should be made with light colored materials. Strips of retroreflective tape should be used to make children visible.

  • On the way: Children should understand and follow these rules:
    • Do not enter homes or apartments without adult supervision.
    • Walk, do not run, from house to house. Do not cross yards and lawns where unseen objects or the uneven terrain can present tripping hazards.
    • Walk on sidewalks, not in the street.
    • Walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic if there are no sidewalks.

Treats: To ensure a safe trick-or-treat outing, parents are urged to:
    • Give children an early meal before going out.
    • Insist that treats be brought home for inspection before anything is eaten.
    • Wash fruit and slice into small pieces.
    • When in doubt, throw it out.

Game Night Kids' Party Games. Make game night the theme at your child's next party

By , Guide
Kids love to compete. One great birthday party idea is to have a game night (or, since we’re talking about grade-school age kids, game afternoon). Serve a fun and simple lunch such as healthy subs or pizza, set up some typical “game night” snacks such as popcorn, pretzels and cut-up fruit, and let the kids' party games begin.

Do you believe that having birthday parties at home is just too stressful? When you do a little planning you can turn a bad experience into a wonderful birthday party that your child will remember for the rest Of their life.
Here are 4 steps that will give you the best birthday party ever.
  • make a Party Plan - A birthday party checklist will help you keep control Your check list will remind you of all the little things that you might forget. . Include everything from "bake a cake" to “send out invitations“. Put a “date done” and “time done” section on your list to keep track of each item This “date done” confirms that you did do the item. The “time done” serves two purposes. First, your helpers know what and when to do something and second, keeps the party from going too long. Click on PARTY PLANER to find a sample plan.
  • Ask for Help - You have friends with children. Suggest that if they help you, you will help them when it is their child’s birthday. Ask a grandparent. Believe it or not, they went through the same feelings when they did parties for you. They know that you need help with decorating, clean-up or running games and activities. This way you can enjoy the party too.
  • Involve the birthday child -It is their day. They should be consulted as to the theme of the party,(check out our best selling theme packs)who to invite, go shopping with you for decorations and party favors, as well as the planning and preparations. It is their special day and it will make them feel special. It will also turn what started out as a chore for you into a bonding experience with your child.
  • Hire a photographer - You are going to be too busy with kids, putting out food, and all the other little details and will not get a chance to use the camera .Give a digital camera to one of your helpers, contact your local high school to see if they have a camera club or hire a professional photographer. Make sure you suggest what special pictures you want to have taken, such as cake cutting but otherwise, let them just snap away. Digital cameras take tons of pictures that cost nothing. Then you print and pay for what you want to keep
